Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What types of pets do you photograph?
I specialise in photographing dogs, but have also worked with cats, rabbits, chinchillas, birds and horses. If you have a unique or exotic pet, feel free to reach out—I love working with all animals!
What should I expect during a pet photography session?
Expect a fun, relaxed, and positive experience! We’ll start with a pre-session consultation to discuss your pet’s personality, your goals for the photos, and any special requests you might have. On the day of the session, I’ll work at your pet’s pace to ensure they’re comfortable, and we can take plenty of breaks to keep things stress-free. My goal is to capture your pet’s unique personality and the bond you share.
Where do your photography sessions take place?
I offer both in-studio and on-location sessions. I can also bring the studio to your home, providing you have the space. For in-studio sessions, I hire a studio in Shirley, Croydon, providing a calm, controlled environment that’s perfect for pets who may get overwhelmed by outdoor distractions. For on-location sessions, I can photograph your pet at your home, in a park, or at another location that’s meaningful to you. Just let me know your preference, and we’ll find the perfect spot.
How long does a session last?
A typical session lasts between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the type of session and your pet’s energy level. Some pets may need a little more time to warm up, while others may be ready to go after just a few minutes. I always make sure to give your pet breaks as needed, so the session is comfortable and enjoyable for them.
Do you provide props or backgrounds?
Yes, I have a selection of props and backdrops to help create the perfect scene for your pet’s photos. If you have a specific theme or vision in mind, feel free to bring your own props, toys, or accessories to the session! We’ll work together to design a set that reflects your pet’s personality.
Can I be in the photos with my pet?
Absolutely! I love capturing the special bond between you and your pet. If you’d like to be included in the photos, I recommend scheduling a portrait session that focuses on you and your pet together. These photos are a great way to create lasting memories with your furry friend!
How do I prepare my pet for the session?
To ensure your pet is comfortable and cooperative during the session, here are a few tips:
-
Before the session, give your pet some time to relax and get accustomed to the environment. If it’s an on-location shoot, try to bring them to the location beforehand so they can explore.
-
Bring favourite toys, high-value treats, or anything that helps keep your pet happy. We can use them to catch their attention or reward them for great poses!
-
Ensure your pet is well-rested and has had a chance to exercise before the session to help them stay calm and focused.
-
Setting them up for success, Feel free to brush up on any skills, sit, lie down, and anything else you feel may be able to help in the lead up to your session. But please don’t stress about it. I have worked with many pets and rescues who don’t always have the best listening skills.
Do you offer frames, prints, albums or digital files?
Yes! After your session, we will arrange an in person viewing session. I am more than happy to come to your home giving you plenty of time with me to choose your images. We can work together to work on which images and products will work best within your home. You can also order prints, frames, albums, and other photo products to display your pet’s photos in your home. I offer a range of high-quality print options to preserve your memories. You can choose digital only options, however all prints and products come with the matching digital images anyway.
What if my pet isn’t cooperating during the session?
No worries! Some pets take a little while to warm up to a camera, and that’s totally normal. I’m patient and will take the time to help your pet feel at ease. If they need a break, we can take one. My goal is to make sure the experience is enjoyable for both you and your pet.
How far in advance should I book a session?
To secure your preferred date and time, I recommend booking at least 2-4 weeks in advance. However, if you need a session sooner, feel free to reach out—I’ll do my best to accommodate your schedule!
What happens if I need to reschedule?
Life happens, and I understand. If you need to reschedule, please notify me as soon as possible. I try to be flexible, but I ask for at least 24 hours notice to avoid any fees. We’ll work together to find a new date that works for you and your pet.
Can I purchase a gift certificate for a pet photography session?
Yes, gift certificates are available! A pet photography session makes for a wonderful gift for pet lovers. Contact me for more details on how to purchase a gift certificate.
How do I book a session?
Booking a session is easy! Simply contact me through the website or email me to discuss your needs, schedule a consultation, and choose a date. I’ll walk you through the process and make sure all your questions are answered.
Do you have any tips for making the most of our session?
To ensure a successful session:
-
Keep your pet’s routine in mind—if they’re more energetic in the morning or afternoon, try to schedule accordingly.
-
Think about your dog’s groom. You may prefer your dog to be fresh from the groomers, or you may like to wait until their coat has grown a little before the shoot. Breeds that have bushy eyebrows such as Schnauzer’s and Cockerpoo’s can benefit from a little eyebrow trim before hand to ensure we can see the beauty of their eyes. Feel free to bring along a brush with you.
-
Relax and enjoy the moment—pets can sense our energy, so a calm, happy atmosphere makes for the best photos!

Weather Policy: Rescheduling Due to Bad Weather for environmental sessions
-
We want your pet’s photo session to be a fun and enjoyable experience, with beautiful, natural photos to match! We understand that weather can be unpredictable, especially when planning outdoor shoots with your furry friend. Our top priority is the safety and comfort of both you and your pet.
-
If the weather is not ideal for your session—whether it's too rainy, windy, or extreme heat—we will work with you to reschedule for a better day. We keep a close eye on forecasts leading up to your session, and if we feel that the conditions will not be safe or conducive to great photos, we’ll reach out to discuss alternative dates. However, overcast or slightly dim days can work so much better than full sunshine.
How It Works:
-
Forecast Check: We monitor weather forecasts closely and will notify you 24-48 hours before your session if we think rescheduling may be necessary.
-
Flexible Rescheduling: If we do need to postpone, we’ll find a new date that works for both of us, with plenty of flexibility to accommodate your schedule.
-
No Extra Fees: We never charge additional fees for rescheduling due to bad weather. Our goal is to make sure you get the best experience possible.
-
We always want your pet’s photo session to be enjoyable for both of you—so we’ll only move forward with the shoot when we know the conditions are right for great photos and your pet's well-being.
-
Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns about the weather policy. We’re happy to help and look forward to capturing beautiful moments with you and your pet!

My Dog Won’t Sit Still
Dogs that don’t like to sit still often offer some of the most candid, joyous shots, full of life and movement. And we wouldn’t have it any other way!
Why Movement Makes the Best Photos
-
Action Tells a Story: When your dog is in motion, you can see their personality come alive. Whether they’re chasing a toy, jumping for joy, or happily bounding through the grass, these moments tell the unique story of who they are.
-
Unposed Perfection: A still photo might be nice, but nothing beats the natural beauty of a dog in action. The wagging tail, the flying ears, the sparkling eyes—these authentic moments speak volumes.
-
Unforgettable Expressions: From a happy bark to a joyful leap, the excitement of dogs that don’t sit still brings out some of the most priceless expressions. You’ll treasure these images for years to come.
What to Expect From Our Photography Session
-
No Posing Required: If your dog isn’t keen on sitting still, you don’t have to worry about perfect poses. We’ll focus on capturing your dog’s natural movements, making sure the shoot is as stress-free and fun as possible.
-
Patience & Flexibility: We understand that dogs, especially the high-energy ones, need time to feel comfortable and have fun. We’ll take the time to let your pup roam, run, and play in their own way. The best shots come when they’re relaxed and in their element.
-
Interactive Play: From tossing toys to running alongside them, we’ll encourage your dog to interact with their surroundings in the most natural way. The goal is to create a relaxed, fun atmosphere that allows your dog’s true character to shine through.
-
Professional Gear & Techniques: We use specialised equipment and techniques that allow us to capture fast-moving moments with crisp detail, ensuring that every tail wag, leap, and zoomie is perfectly preserved.
-
Expect the Unexpected: Sometimes the best photos happen when you least expect them. Stay relaxed and let the session unfold naturally.
Your Dog’s Best Moments, Captured
Dogs that don’t like to sit still have endless charm. Their exuberance and playful spirit are what make them unforgettable, and we’re here to capture that joy in every shot. Let us help you preserve those moments—whether it’s a muddy adventure, a game of fetch, or just a happy romp in the park.

Ensuring the Welfare of Animals During a Pet Photoshoot
At Caroline Lilian Photography, we believe that the well-being of your pet is just as important as capturing the perfect shot. We understand that pets are not only beloved members of the family, but also unique individuals with their own personalities, needs, and comfort levels. Our goal is to make every pet photoshoot a positive, stress-free experience that prioritises the safety, health, and happiness of your animal companion.
Here’s how we ensure the welfare of your pet during every photoshoot:
1. Gentle and Patient Approach
We are passionate about working with pets. We take a calm and patient approach, ensuring that your pet feels at ease. We never rush the process and understand that pets may need extra time to acclimate to new surroundings, equipment, or poses. We use positive reinforcement techniques, offering treats and encouragement to help your pet feel comfortable throughout the session. If your pet has specific dietary needs, we encourage you to bring your own treats that are safe for them.
2. Stress-Free Environment
We aim to create a relaxing and welcoming environment for both you and your pet. Whether we're working in our studio or on location, we minimise distractions and create a space that reduces any potential stressors for your animal. Soft lighting, minimal noise, and a calm atmosphere help keep your pet relaxed, allowing us to capture the most natural and joyful moments.
3. Comfortable Poses
Every pet has its own unique style and comfort zone when it comes to posing. We never force animals into uncomfortable or unnatural positions. Instead, we work with your pet’s natural behaviour, offering gentle guidance to encourage them into poses that highlight their best features while ensuring they are never physically restrained. If your pet isn't comfortable with a certain pose, we simply adjust and try something else that feels better for them.
4. Frequent Breaks and Hydration
Long photoshoots can be tiring for pets, so we always schedule regular breaks to let your pet rest, hydrate, and have some downtime. This is especially important for puppies, senior animals, or pets with special needs. We want your pet to feel refreshed and energised throughout the session, ensuring that they remain happy and cooperative.
5. Pet Safety First
Your pet's safety is our top priority. We use pet-friendly equipment, and we take extra care to ensure that nothing in the photoshoot environment poses a risk to your animal’s safety. Whether it's ensuring no hazardous props are used or that our backdrop is secure, we constantly monitor the space for any potential dangers. Additionally, if you have any special instructions regarding your pet’s health or behaviour, we are happy to accommodate them.
6. Handling Specific Needs
Every pet is different, and we understand that some animals may have special needs or require extra attention. Whether your pet is anxious, older, or has medical conditions, we are prepared to tailor the session to their specific needs. Let us know ahead of time, and we’ll do everything we can to make sure your pet feels at ease during the photoshoot. If your pet needs to be on a lead during the photoshoot, we can take care of that in post-production for you.
7. Incorporating Your Pet’s Comfort Items
To help your pet feel more at home during the photoshoot, we encourage you to bring along familiar items such as their favourite toy, blanket, or even a beloved person. These comfort items can help reduce anxiety and make your pet feel secure, creating a more enjoyable experience for both your pet and the photographer.
8. Open Communication
We value communication and collaboration with pet owners. We encourage you to share any concerns or specific needs your pet may have before and during the shoot. Whether it's their preferred method of interaction or any health conditions we should be aware of, open communication ensures a smoother experience for both you and your pet. We will send you a pre-shoot questionnaire to cover things that can be important for us to know in advance to ensure the well-being of your pet and give you the chance to let us know any specific needs your pet may have.
9. Respecting Your Pet’s Limits
Some pets may feel uneasy in unfamiliar situations, while others are ready to jump into the action. We always respect your pet’s boundaries and limits. If your pet becomes too stressed, we pause or reschedule the shoot to ensure their emotional and physical well-being. We also take care to avoid overstimulating or overwhelming them during the shoot.

At Caroline Lilian Photography, we’re not just about capturing the best pictures—we’re about making sure that your pet enjoys the entire experience. We believe that a relaxed and happy pet leads to authentic, stunning photos that you’ll cherish forever.
